Sports Handicapping - What is Buying Points?
Buying point is the practice in sports handicapping in which the bettor pays for a better spread. Usually all
straight bets are based on a -110 moneyline. That means if you want to win $100 then you must risk $110. When you buy points,
the moneyline usually changes by .10 for every 1/2 half point. In English, that means if you buy a 1/2 point then you are risking $120, whole point $130 and so on and so on. I almost always by the half point when I like a team and a half point is involved but I almost never buy the whole point or more. I
know many people swear by it but I never do it. I don't want to get beat by the hook (1/2 point) but I am too cheap for the whole point.
