Sports Handicapping - What is Hedging?

Hedging is a term used by sports handicappers in the sports handicapping industry to describe a situation where the bettor puts himself in a position that he cannot lose. I know it sounds like a position that we all would put ourselves in if we could but it is quite difficult. One way would be to put together a parlay that has one team playing after all the other games are graded. If the first wave of games all hit, then you can go against the last one to guarantee yourself some profit. Example, you have a 4 team parlay for $50 (Magic-12, Celtics +1, Wizards +5, Lakers -6) and the Magic, Celtics and Wizards all cover. To hedge your bet you could take whoever is playing the Lakers for $100 and that would guarantee you at least $50. Also, you can hedge in more subtle ways that do not guantee a win like, for instance, if the Nuggets are playing the Heat in Denver and the line is Denver -9 and 199. You are not sure if Denver will cover the 9 but you think they will win the game. Take the OVER 199. They are an up-tempo team that will score a lot so if they win, chances are the game will go over. That philosophy applies to all sports, not just NBA basketball picks. If done correctly, hedging can be a very profitable way to bet.
